Agartala, the capital of Tripura, was set-up in 1850
by Maharaja Radha Krishna Kishore Manikya Bahadur. Although Tripura is open
to tourists, it is best to check with local authorities about the prevailing
security situation.
Agartala is located in the western part of Tripura, astride the Haroa River.
It is 1680 km from Calcutta and 599 km from Guwahati. National Highway No.
44 connects Agartala to Guwahati via Shillong. It takes about 24 hours by
road from Guwahati to reach Agartala. The journey time by road between Dhaka
and Agartala is approximately 3 hours.

HOW
TO REACH
By Air - Agartala is connected by airlines flights with Calcutta,
Guwahati, Delhi.
By Rail - The two nearest railway stations are Kumarghat (160 kms) and
Dharama Nagar (200 kms). Both the stations on the North-East Frontier
Railway, connected with Lumding & Guwahati, where as Lumding and Guwahati
are connected with Calcutta and other major stations in India.
By Road - Good condition roads connect Agartala with Silchar- 288 kms,
Guwahati 599 kms, Shillong 499 kms, Dharmanagar- 200 kms. Tripura Road
Transport Corporation buses connect Silchar, Shillong and Dharma Nagar to
Agartala.

Best time to travel Agartala is between October to March.

Ujjayanta Palace - This royal house, which stands
in the Capital city Agartala covering one sq.Km. area was built by
Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya during 1899-1901.It is a two storied
mansion, having a mixed type of architecture with three high domes, the
central one being 86’ high. The magnificent tile floor, curved wooden
ceiling and beautifully crafted doors are particularly notable. The
palace is set with huge Mughal style gardens, beautified by pools and
gardens and tiled floors. Flood lighting and fountains have also added
to its beauty.

Neermahal - This magnificent lake palace was
constructed as a summer resort in 1930 by late Maharaja Birbikram
Kishore Manikya Bahadur in the middle of a natural lake called
Rudrasagar having an area of 5.35 Sq.Km. The construction was undertaken
by Martin & Burn Co. and it is the only lake palace in the entire
eastern India. Flood lighting of the palace has been arranged in the
evening. In addition, water sports facilities are being extended. The
palace is going to be renovated and a museum depicting the royal life
style will be set up inside the palace. In addition Light & Sound show
on the historical past and cultural heritage of Tripura will be
organized in the palace. In water number of migratory birds are found in
the lake surrounding Neermahal.

Kunjaban Palace -
A green hillock known as Kunjaban ( a bower) for its scenic beauty
stands to the north of Ujjayanta palace at a distance of about 1 Km.
Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya (1909-1923) selected this beautiful
place for building a suburban palace for retreat and constructed a
palace in 1917 which was named as ‘Pushbanta Palace’. The Maharaja
himself being gifted artist is said to have drawn the plan of the palace
and its adjoining garden. The palace basks on the hallowed memory of
Rabindranath Tagore, the Nobel laureate poet. It was one of his favorite
retreat in Tripura, where he composed many of his songs. |

Sepahijala -
It is situated almost at a distance of 20 kms. south from Agartala town.
It is really a green heaven in the earth-away from the work of near
shattering noise and speed. Round the palace a natural lake runs where
half a dozen of paddle boats awaiting tourists step at the landing. A
dense forest all around gives pleasure to the eyes. It has been
decorated with a dear park where deer move here and there. A mini
zoological garden with pythons and peacocks is a great attraction to the
tourists. the wooden bungalow with a beautiful view is a great
attraction to the visitors for rest house

Kamalasagar - It is situated almost at a
distance of 30 kms. from Agartala town. Vast lake at the border of
Bangladesh was excavated by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya in 15th century. On
the bank of Kamalasagar, there is a famous temple of Goddess Kali dating
back to 16th century. It is one of the excellent picnic spots in the
state with scenic beauty.

Venuban Vihar -
This shrine , though small in size, preserves some beautiful idols of
Lord Budha and Bodhisatva. This idols being Burmes in Origin. Here Budha
Jayanti is celebrated on the occasion of Budha Purnima. |

WHERE TO EAT
There are good restaurants in the city and you can also try the special
restaurant at the luxury hotels. Typical Bengali cuisine includes
rice, fish and dal (lentils). Bengali sweets are also commonly available.
