Assam the land of rich, green land of rolling plains and thick forests & lovely people. The place is the entrance to the north eastern part of India. Located at eastern Himalayan foothills, Assam is separated by Bangladesh from mainstream India. The state is bounded in the north by Arunachal Pradesh and Bhutan; in the east by Nagaland, Manipur, and Burma; in the south by Bangladesh, Tripura, Mizoram, and Bangladesh; and in the west by West Bengal. Dispur is the capital of Assam.

The grand Brahmaputra river that has its origins in Tibet charts its majestic course through this state. This mystic land of eternal blue hills and beautiful rivers is renowned for its tea, rich flora and fauna, the world famous one horned rhinoceros and other rare species of wildlife on the verge of extinction. Barring Africa, there is perhaps no part of the world where such a variety of wildlife exists.

Assam is a northeastern state of India with its capital at Dispur. Located just below the eastern Himalayan foothills, it is surrounded by the other northeastern states: Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Meghalaya. Assam and its commercial capital Guwahati form the gateway to the northeastern states, together called the seven sisters. These states are connected to the rest of India via Assam's border with West Bengal and a narrow strip called the "Chicken's Neck." Assam also shares international borders with Bhutan, China and Bangladesh.

There are two distinct climates operating in Assam. While the hills enjoy sub-alpine climate, the plains of the state experience tropical climate with high humidity level in the monsoon. Winter touches this state in the end of the month of October and lasts until the end of February. The nights are cold and the mornings are foggy during this time. Summer begins by mid-May with high level of humidity and rainfall. June is the beginning of monsoon. Thunderstorms known as "Bordoichila" is a frequent occurrence during the afternoons. Spring and autumn with moderate temperatures and modest rainfall are the best seasons of Assam.
