WHAT TO SEE |
|
|
Radha nagar beach - It is the most beautiful on the island and was
rated as the best in Asia by Time in 2004. Naturally, the Tourism
department is having a field day. Nice white sand backed by a forest
that provides welcome shade looks out over turquoise water, some
stretches with a sandy bottom good for swimming and some with excellent
coral reefs that are great for snorkeling. A great combination indeed.
Sunset is a particularly beautiful time to be here. A man with an
elephant walks through the forest occasionally, offering rides for a
fee. Buses run here throughout the day until sunset, as do
auto-rickshaws and shared 4 wheel-drive trucks.

|
|
Elephant beach - It is further north from Radha
nagar and is popular with Indian tourists. The shoreline here was
largely swept away by the 2004 sunami and the beach is a fraction of
what it used to be.
It’s amazing how the water changes color with the light.. here it’s
reflecting the inky gray of the sky..there’s gonna be rain, lots of it.. |

|
Island Camping - Tent Resort, has eight,
good-sized tents for Rs 250 to 300 per person. You can only stay for
four days. Well water is available for washing. There is a basic
restaurant.

Barefootat at Havelock - This small resort is set in rainforest and tropical
fruit trees behind a pristine 2 km white-sand stretch of the quirkily named
Beach No. 7 at Havelock Island. Barefoot at Havelock is the first and still
the only ecologically friendly resort in the Andaman Islands. Set in 7 acres
of grounds, the resort consists of 18 beautifully designed wood and thatch
cottages and villas with spacious interiors and ensuite bathrooms. The
property has been constructed using materials which are environmentally
sensitive to their natural surroundings. The rooms have large double beds
with oversize pillows and are fronted by a floor-to-ceiling picture window
and rolling shutters that gives you a beautiful view of the tropical foliage
and fruit trees. |

WHERE TO EAT
Pristine Beach Resort is one of the more popular. The restaurant serves good
food and beer. Emerald Gecko & Orient Legend Resort is another good
restaurant at Havelock Island.
