Kalpeni is known for its scenic beauty and the
small islets called Tilakkam & Pitti and an uninhabited island on the north
called Cheriyam. A huge shallow lagoon encloses all of them. A peculiar
feature of Kalpeni atoll is the huge storm bank of coral debris along the
eastern and south-eastern shorelines.
It is believed that huge boulders were thrown up during a storm in 1847. It
is a progressive island. It was in this island that girls first went to
school when women's education was considered a taboo.
Kalpeni is an island in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. It is located 63
km south of Andrott is the most southeasterly of the Cannanore Islands. It
consists of an elongated atoll formation with two main islands on its
eastern side. The southern island of Kalpeni is the larger island at 2.28
kmē. Cheriyam Island in the north is narrow with an area of 46 ha. A number
of small islets are located on the lagoon side of Kalpeni. Its lagoon is the
largest to be found in the archipelago. Kalpeni has three uninhabited,
satellite islands, all surrounded by an immense lagoon of spectacular
beauty. Sunlight on the water causes it to sparkle and flash like a million
aquamarines.
Tourism :- Banyan factory and the light house is the most famous
tourist destination of kalpeni. Here at kalpeni guest can enjoy swim,
reef-walk or water-sport on kayaks, sail boats & pedal boats. Water sports
crafts are given on hire basis as well. Kalpeni is part of Coral Reef and
Coconut Grove Packages.

HOW
TO REACH
By Air :- Cochin International Airport links Lakshadweep with
the mainland. Onward flights from Cochin are available to most of
the airports in India and to selected foreign destinations.
By Ship :- Four passenger ships- MV Tippu Sultan, MV
Bharat Seema, MV Amindivi and MV Minicoy operate between Cochin and
Lakshadweep. The passage takes between 14 to 20 hours. The ships
offer different classes of accommodation. The ships have cafeteria
and snack bars, entertainment lounge, video shows and upper-deck
promenade etc.

WHAT TO SEE |

Light House :- Light house is mainly used for
navigation purpose. Its Shape is like Cylindrical concrete tower
with black and white bands. This light is operational throughout the
year.
Light house comprises three white flashes every 20 seconds having
ranges of 18 nautical miles. Viewers can have glimpse on it from
ground only.
