Kausani is
famous for it's breathtakingly close view of the Himalayan Peaks and
it's solitudes and greenery. The wide expanse of the famous Katyur
Valley lies in front of it as you wake up to experience the Kausani
sunrise. Kausani's beauty arrested the feet of even Mahatama Gandhi, who
stayed for some time at this place. The memory that brief stay of that
great man lingers behind in the Anasakti Ashrama. Another great man of
India the famous Hindi poet Sumitra Nandan Pant was born here. There is
small museum to earmark that sacred spot. The famous folk singer Gopidas
was also inspired by the beauty of Kausani. Pinnath (10KMs), Bura
Pinnath (5KMs) and Bhakot are the highest points near Kausani.
Loacation - Situated at an altitude of 1,890 m, Kausani is a splendid
hill station in the district of Almora of Uttaranchal. Popularly known as
the 'Switzerland of India', is a perfect getaway from the heat of the
cities. It is 51 km from Almora, 62 km from Ranikhet, 117 km from Nainital,
198 km from Pithoragarh, 174 km from Ramnagar and 370 km from Delhi.

By Air - The closest airport is Pantnagar which is 180 kms away.
By Rail - The closest railway station is Kathgodam. This is 142 kms away.
By Road - Kaushani is connected by road from Delhi, Chandigarh, Lucknow,
Nainital,
Pantnagar, Ranikhet, Gopeshwar etc.

Anasakti Ashram - A quiet and revered place where
the Father of the Nation spent some days. Set against the breathtaking
beauty of the Himalayas, this place has been made into a memorial in his
memory.
In 1929, Mahatma Gandhi spent 12 days here. He was so enamoured of
Kausani that he called it the Switzerland of India and brought his
thoughts out in his book called Anasakti Yoga. The place where he stayed
is called the Anasakti Ashram. Earlier the guest house of a tea estate
now its an ashram and offers a good resting place for travellers and can
accommodate 300 people. Every evening prayers are conducted in the main
hall. It also has a library. There is nothing like the mesmerizing
Himalayan sunset and sunrise from the Ashram premises.

Lakshmi Ashram - 1 km away from the Anasakti
Ashram, this place is a center run by women who do social service.
Gandhiji's disciple, Sarala Behen spent her life here doing social
service. This ashram is located in a solitary area in a dense jungle.

Chaukori - It is 75 kms away from Kaushani and is
well known for the view it gives of the Himalayan peaks. A person
viewing the Himalayas from here feels like he can touch them. For an
overnight stay there is a tourist bungalow.

Bageshwer - It isSituated around 90 KMs
from Almora, Bageswer is now a new district headquarter and the centre
of administration for the entire region called Danpur. The place is
significant from both religious and tourist point of view. Situated at
the confluence of the rivers Saryu and Gomti, Bageswer is the seat of
the famous Uttaraini fair which is held every year in January. The
famous and ancient temple of Bagnath from which the township gets it's
name has been attracting thousands of devout Hindus year after year
since the birth of history. It is believed that Markandey sage has lived
at the place and that Lord Shiva, one of the most important gods of
Hindus had wandered about as a tiger. Even for the adventurous tourist
Bageshwer is a necessary destination since in order to reach the
glaciers of Sunderdunga, Kafni and Pindari one has to necessarily cross
Bageshwer.

Jageshwar - Jageshwar is located 34 kms from Almora.
There is an ancient Shiva temple at Jageshwar. This temple is surrounded
by huge fur trees. In fact, this temple is in the series of ancient
temples which were built in Kumaon region many centuries ago. The
Jageshwar Shiva temple carries archaeological importance too. the
architecture of this temple is worth giving a close examination. |

Baijnath - Baijnath is a place of much historical
importance. This is 71 kms from Almora and 21 kms from Bageshwar. There
are many ancient temples at Baijnath. These temples have historical and
archaeological importance. These temples have Shiva, Ganesha, Parvati as
the presiding deities. Most of the temples are located along the Gomti
River. These temples were built in 12th and 13th century by rulers of
Katyur dynasty. |

Katarmal – It is a remote village, situated a
distance of 2.5 kms from the banks of the Kosi river, to the west of
Almora. This village is the seat of a 900 years old Sun temple, built in
the 8th century during the reign of the Katyuri Dynasty Historically,
the significance of this temple is second only to the famous Konark Sun
temple of Orissa. Its uniqueness is reflected in a cluster of 44 small
exquisitely carved temples, surrounding it. In fact, this is the only
sun temple or "Surya Mandir " in this part of Kumaon. It is located 13
kms from Almora.

Pant Museum - A little away from the Kaushani bus
stand is a museum named after the Hindi poet Sumitranandan Pant. The
house which has the museum is the poet's house of his childhood days.
His daily use articles, drafts of his poems, letters, his awards etc.
are displayed here. |

WHERE TO EAT
Pine View Hotel, Himalayan Hotel, Sagar Hotel, Jeetu Trekking Club,
Uttarakhand Hotel, Hotel Holiday Home, Trishul Tourist Rest House, There
are'nt many options available for good eating in Kausani, one can have their
food in the hotels where they are staying. Or one can approach local
Eateries/dhabas which offer mainly vegetarian food.
