Kavaratti is the administrative capital of the
smallest union territory Lakshadweep. Kavaratti is the most developed and
inhabited of 36 islands that are present in the Lakshadweep. Nestled admist
two islands of Agatti and Andrott. The island is about 6 kms in length and 1
km in breadth. This island houses more than 52 aesthetically designed and
developed mosques. The most famous mosque of all of these is the Ujira
mosque with its exotic carvings in wood.
Kavaratti is famous for providing one of the most famous water sports
facilities in India. Various facilities available in Kavaratti are swimming,
kayaking, water-skiing, snorkeling and sailing.
Geography :- The island of Kavaratti lies off the coast of the state
of Kerala. The town is located at 10.57° N 72.62° E[1]. It has an average
elevation of 0 metres (0 feet).
Demographics :- Kavaratti has a population of 10,113. Males
constitute 55% of the population and females 45%. Kavaratti has an average
literacy rate of 78%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male
literacy is 83%, and female literacy is 72%. In Kavaratti 12% of the
population is under 6 years of age.
People :- Main business of people of Kavaratti Island comes from the
tourism industry with main source of income being water sports and adventure
sports. This scenic place is the most commercially developed place in the
Lakshadweep. Friendly people of this remote island are also very talented
with their hands and are famous for the stone carvings this art can be
viewed in the headstones in the graveyards with Koranic texts carved on them
revealing the delicate skill in stone carving.

HOW
TO REACH
By Air :- Cochin International Airport links Lakshadweep with
the mainland. Onward flights from Cochin are available to most of
the airports in India and to selected foreign destinations.
Helicopter transfer is available to Kavaratti through out the year.
By Ship :- Four passenger ships- MV Tippu Sultan, MV
Bharat Seema, MV Amindivi and MV Minicoy operate between Cochin and
Lakshadweep. The passage takes between 14 to 20 hours. The ships
offer different classes of accommodation. The ships have cafeteria
and snack bars, entertainment lounge, video shows and upper-deck
promenade etc.

Water Sports :- High quality equipment of
international standards is being imported for water sports in Kavaratti.
This includes snorkels, glass bottomed boats, rowing and motor boats,
equipment for wind surfing, scuba diving, para sailing and water skiing.
It is the jewel in the crown of the island attracting tourists from all
over the world.
Water sports facilities like Kayaking, sailing, paddle boats, inflatable
motor boats, glass bottom boats and water skiing are available in the
islands of Kavaratti.
The vast expanses of the shallow lagoons provide an ideal setting for
water sports enthusiasts. Kavaratti have facilities for scuba diving.
Deep-sea fishing buffs can pursue big game fishing. Barracuda, Sail
Fish, Yellow Fin Tuna, Travelly and Wahoo are abundant in the seas
around Kavaratti Island. Local boats with experienced crew can be hired.
Kayaks, canoes, surf modules, snorkels and other water sports are also
